Will Kreedam beat Varalaru?

Kireedam has opened in style. Ajith is always considered a 'King of Opening' at the box office. His fans have not disappointed him this time. Directed by A L Vijay, the movie starring Ajith, Trisha and Raj Kiran in pivotal roles has every ingredient in it to become a blockbuster. Ajith plays a youth, who aspires to become a police officer to realize his father's dreams. G V Prakash's music and Thiru's cinematography have won rave reviews.

1995 - Aasai (Rs.50 million)

1996 - Kadhal Kottai (Rs.100 million)

1999 - Vaali (Rs.200 million)

2002 - Villan (Rs.300 million)

2006 - Varalaru (Rs.500 million)

2007 - Kreedam?

Some useless people are understandably peeved at the overwhelmingly positive reviews that keep piling up for the latest Thala blockbuster. But let’s get to the numbers first. Sify, as usual, was at its dirty trick. It claimed the film released in only 185 screens. This is nonsense. Actually it would be almost twice this - 360 screens.

Anyway, Sify did not accept that Villan was the all-time blockbuster of Thala until the release of Varalaru in 2006. So, we guess Sify will only accept Varalaru as the present all-time blockbuster until a new peak is scaled by Kreedam/Billa by the end of this year. Will Kreedam beat Varalaru in the present climate of reduced ticket rates? Aalwar grossed Rs.100 million as it suffered from overwhelmingly negative reviews. So Kreedam should definitely do more than that.

Sivaji has already crossed the Rs.500 million marks in the past five weeks and is still a competitive force to reckon with. If the film finds steady patronage, Kreedam may cross the Rs.300 million mark at the box office. To beat Varalaru, Kreedam needs long legs, repeat audience, more shows and clever marketing blitz.

Ajit’s competitor is only Ajit, right?!!
