Billa dazzles at Premiere
Vishnu’s Billa is the first designer-look Kollywood film with classy action cuts. It's a technically chic, racy, engrossing entertainer with a Hollywood look. The director wears his Hollywood DVD influence on his sleeve, the way a shot is framed, and with black and white colours dominating as the camera angles convey style! Ajit looks sensational and clearly he is at home, playing dual roles of Billa and Velu. He is suave, dashing, and debonair and has terrific screen presence which makes the film work big time. You just cannot think of any other actor in Tamil donning the role made memorable by Rajinikanth.
The film is set in Malaysia to give it a rich look. Billa (Ajit) is a modern day suited and booted underworld don who moves around in the company of two glamour girls Sasha (Nayanthara) and CJ (Namitha) who are part of his gang. Billa deals in all nefarious activities like gun running and drugs and has connections with international mafia gangs. The police force in 11 countries is in hot pursuit of Billa who they feel will lead them to Jagdish, the kingpin behind all the illegal operations. After successfully dodging the cops across the world, Billa is eventually pinned down by a sincere DCP of the Malaysian police Jaiprakash (Prabhu) after a spectacular car chase in which he is fatally injured.
Now Jai (Prabhu) sees Billa’s death as an opportunity to uncover the entire mob ring by replacing him with a look-alike Velu (Ajit) a petty small time crook and a simpleton to infiltrate into the mafia. Velu alias Billa is able to do the impossible by getting all the information that Jai wanted except about Jagdish the master brain of the underworld. But it's when Jai gets killed, that the real problem arises because he was the only man who knew that the real Billa is dead, and that Velu is actually a police mole. The other police officers investigating the case Gokulnath (Rahman) from the Interpol and the local police chief Anil (Aditya) refuses to believe Velu’s statement that he is not Billa when he is caught and interrogated. Velu escapes from police custody and with the help of Sasha uncover the shocking truth about the identity of Jagdish, which leads to a stunning climax.
The director and his team change the norms of commercial Tamil cinema and breaks new ground by having a script comprising of no more than six- seven dialogue tracks, there is no lengthy dialogues, mush or melodrama, all essential ingredients for mass masala films. The EQ (emotional quotient) which is there in large doses in Tamil films is absent here as Vishnu and Ajit are targeting only the multiplex audiences and they are quite honest about it. Yuvan’s title track and theme music is one of the highlights of the film, though the songs fall flat! The re-mix title song My name is Billa… is no patch on the original and lacks its fervor, while the other re-mix number Vethalaiya Pottendi… has a good beat that makes you dance and is well shot The only mass number is Seval Kodi.., with Vijay Yesudas’s striking voice and colourful picturisation .
For Vishnu Vardhan, a one-time assistant of the guru of cinematography Santosh Sivan, everything is visual and is dictated by the camera. Billa is a film where characters are playing mind games. So Vishnu’s cameraman Nirav Shah has used the super 35 mm and his camera is brilliant displaying an array of flourishes- freeze frames, optical dissolves, colour saturated images, giving a static energy to the frames, aided by Sreekar Prasad’s razor sharp editing. The action scenes have been superbly choreographed by William Ong and are a major highlight.
Billa is an out and out Ajit film. Don’t forget to carry a whistle with you when you watch Ajit meld into two characters- Billa with his Armani suit, Rayban glasses, has a Bond look about him and is cucumber cool while Velu is a riot as he brings the house down with typical one-liners (Athu aaru thalai, Naan oru thalai). Ajit brings to Tamil cinema a desification of Steven Segal, Van Damme style of pure high octane action and humour. He seems to be telling the audiences to just sit back and enjoy the fireworks. In short Ajit as Billa is a rocker!
Nayanthara has given her famous six-yard saris a miss and has decided to go full throttle to look her sexiest best in sizzling hot micro-mini shorts, leather jacket, tall boots! The gorgeous Nayan as Sasha is a show stopper and no Tamil heroine has looked so glamorous on screen in recent times, thanks to her right attitude and stylist Anu Vardhan. Her tan make-up and her costumes are designed with the intention to make your jaw drop. She has a beautiful body which she flaunts daringly and has no qualms about appearing in a two-piece string bikini and is also able to bring out the cold aloofness and bitterness of her character.
Namitha as CJ oozes sex appeal, is surprisingly restrained and her silences give meaning to the deep loyalty and devotion that her character has for Billa. Prabhu as the police officer is a delight while Rahman and Aditya are adequate. New girl Rose Dawn is a disappointment in the item number and is no match to Helen or Kareena’s sensuous jig.
Billa delivers the goods with its great star cast, a designer look, technical glitz, perfect chemistry making it an entertainment extravaganza. Fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride. Don’t miss it.
Verdict- Racy & Rocking (Sify)

Billa Bookings - Status
Sathyam Cinemas, Chennai's premium multiplex, which has online booking as well as phone booking, had informed the fans on Sunday evening that it would start at 12 midnight. Some of the fans, who normally crash early, had their alarms set to wake them up at 12 a.m. so as to be the first to book tickets for the first show. The booking opened a few minutes before midnight and Sathyam Cinemas' call center was flooded with calls, which almost jammed the several lines they had engaged for this purpose. Those who woke up an hour late were surprised to find that the tickets for the first three days were booked within just one hour. Sathyam, the biggest screen in the multiplex, with more than a thousand seats, is screening four shows which makes it 11,000 seats approximately for the first three days. Amazingly, all this was booked in just an hour. This usually happens only for Rajinikanth movies. The scene wasn't any different in the other theaters as serpentine queues were seen outside INOX, another multiplex, scheduled to open its counters at 9 a.m. this morning witnessed huge crowds gathering outside the mall where it is housed but they however had to return disappointed as they later announced that it will be issued only tomorrow, December 11th. Mammoth crowds waiting to book their tickets has jammed the roads leading to Kasi Theatre, which also screens Billa. According to our sources, the police are having a tough time controlling the traffic as well as the crowd. With the booking for the first day closed within an hour, fans are also demanding a special show a day before the release of the movie.
The last time theaters witnessed such huge crowds was for this year's biggest hit Sivaji. Guess all the publicity and hype has paid off well.

Ajith’s Akbar Eyes Parvathi
Andhra’s latest sensation Parvathi Melton has taken her place, this buxom beauty is the most talked about heroine in Telugu films today. She was to make her entry into Tamil films with Unnale Unnale and even completed screen tests for the same but unfortunately she lost out to Sada, reasons they say were that she demanded a huge sum for that movie. Little did she know it would have cemented her place in the hearts of Tamil audience.

'Thala' Deepavali
But quick to put the rumors to rest is director Vishnuvardhan. According to the director, “The film will hit theatres on Deepavali day. It would surely satisfy the fans of both 'Superstar' Rajnikanth and 'Ultimate Star' Ajith kumar”.
Billa is a remake of yesteryear Rajnikanth classic titled the same. It stars Nayanthara, Namitha among others in the cast.
Says Vishnuvardhan, “Billa has been shaping up well. The performance of Ajith will be the highlight of the movie. Understanding that expectations are high since the film is the remake of a 'Superstar' starrer, Ajith has come out with his best”.
Only two more songs need to be filmed, Vishnuvardhan said and added they would be canned in Malaysia.

Ajith’s Agarathi
Tharun is also making his onscreen debut as villain in Simbhu’s Kettavan. But his next directorial venture with Ajith is a big step in his career indeed. The movie is titled Agarathi and has three young belles in the lead – Meera Jasmine, Nayantara and one more, whom Tharun wants to keep under wraps. It just makes us wonder what this young director has in store for Ajith and his audience…

Billa In Malaysia
Another reason for this secrecy is that most of the film has been shot in Malaysia. Most of the film has been completed and is in post-production. With only two songs left to be shot, the entire unit is expected to complete it in Malyasia very soon.
The film is expected to hit the screens during Diwali.

Ajith might be Akbar?
Earlier, rumours were afloat in the Kollywood circles that Prabhu Deva would direct the movie. Well, now the focus has shifted to his elder brother Raju Sundaram. Gossip mills have it that when Raju approached Ajith with a story he seemed to have liked it and has given a go ahead signal. And the latest heart-throb, Shriya, could be Ajith’s arm candy in this film.
The movie is tentatively titled as Akbar, according to our sources and all details are expected to be announced formally in a few days. If everything falls in place, then Akbar may start rolling from December.

The wait for the Billa look!
Generally Shankar's films are very stringently kept under wraps and when he teamed with Rajinikanth for Sivaji, the confidentiality associated with the film was of the highest order. But despite this, there were few stills that were released officially as well as leaked out through the media, which gave a fair idea about Super Star's looks. However, no stills of Billa 2007 have found their way to the hands of media be it Ajith's Billa get up or the gypsy get up of his look alike.

Ajith on successful paths of MGR
“Try not to be a man of success, but rather to be a man of value” said Albert Einstein and of course Ajith is a man of value. Apart from giving successful films, he has proved to be a man who gives respect to values for all beings especially for debutant directors. S J Suryah in an interview had recently said that it is because of Ajith, he is there today in the industry. Encouraging with high spiritedness, he offered him the chance to direct the film Vaali.
Hats off to this gigantic personality for his stupendous and enthralling performance although his career. Ajithfans.com wishes him all the success for his forthcoming films and bag more awards in future.

It’s official : Billa ready to conquer Diwali
The old Billa was a remake of the Hindi Don which was played by Amitabh. A year ago Sharukh Khan remade the old Don in Hindi which went on to become a super hit. The Hindi remake directed by Farhan Akhtar had a twist which was totally different to the old movie and many expect that the new Tamil movie will also have some unexpected twists. However, director Vishnuvardhan said that he has given due respect to one of the most liked action films and hasn’t made any changes. But he has tried to make the script as stylish as possible.
The action thriller was expected to hit the screens on Diwali, but due to Ajith’s ill health the movie was stalled for quite sometime, therefore rumors were afloat that the movie will not make it on time. But the optimistic director says that the one month rest has recharged everyone and they are working extra hard to complete the movie on time. Now almost 70% of the movie has been shot and all the scenes featuring Namitha has been completed. But sources say that scenes with Nayantara are yet to be filmed. It is also said that Nayantara has played a very glamorous role. Yuvan Shankar Raja has come out with some excellent music. Vishnuvardhan and Yuvan’s last two combinations Arindhum Ariyamalum and Pattiyal are musically well received and the duo is on their way to a hat trick.
Ajith is rumoured to have played his character very stylishly and the director agreed with the superstar’s contention that only Ajith could do justice to the role. And the movie is surely going to come as a Diwali treat to all Ajith fans. All the best to the Billa team.

Ajith rocks with vibrations in Billa
Yuvan has completed scoring music for all the songs out of which 2 songs would be a remix of ‘My name is Billa’ and ‘Vethalaya Pottendi’ from yesteryear Billa starring Rajnikanth. Sources close to the unit say that theme song for the film has come out well and remaining portion is being shot in AVM Studio and Binny Mills. With the film getting released for Diwali, the audio launching would take place during first week of October.
Meanwhile London based Ayngaran films has bought A - Z Rights of Billa 2007 which includes Audio, DVD, Distribution, FMS etc for a whopping price.

Life is not only victory-defeat – Thala philosophizes
You have become so calm, almost become like an Ajithananda?
“If you also want to enjoy this same peace, do not ask me too many questions,” responds Ajith with a charming condition in his answer.
“When we ourselves do not have enough time to know about ourselves, why comment on other people’s opinions? That’s why I prefer to be silent. After that, do you know, the happiness I have enjoyed can be made almost into a book.”
Would you dabble in racing any more?
“Not having sponsor is not the only reason I’m not into racing any more. There are other reasons too. As far as I am concerned, it is a matter of pride to have participated in a Formula 3 race and attained even the third position. I consider it a feat in itself.”
Looks like a defeat now and then in matter of story choice? “I am not the only person responsible for the success or flop of a film. Life is full of ups and downs. Success and defeat is not all that makes up life. If anyone decides that these two constitute life, then that person’s life will be an endless round of gambling resulting in loss of peace of mind.”
One must learn to make life nice. Otherwise, it will turn into a knife!
Wow! That’s a super philosophy!

Prabhu on Ajith's trail
The fact that the movie is a remake of Rajnikanth's yesteryear blockbuster Billa has created a lot of expectations among the Ajith and Rajni fans.
Shot extensively in Malaysia, the movie features Ajith in the role of an underworld don Billa and Prabhu as a honest CBI officer giving him a chase.
‘The encounter scenes between Ajith and Prabhu has been shot in a gripping manner by cinematographer Nirav Shah and is sure to bring the audience to their seat edge’, says sources close to the Billa unit. Also Rahman plays another CBI officer.
“Billa will be sleek and stylish”, says Vishnuvardhan.

It’s all about choices
For some time Ajith had retreated into a shell — a sabbatical of sorts from the media. “Somewhere deep down I began to feel that with too many interviews circulating, people could get the impression I’m narcissistic, while the truth is far from it. That’s when I thought it was time for silence and re-assessment.”
With no Godfather, and absolutely ignorant about the ways of the industry, Ajith has managed a marathon on his own. He was just around 22 when his first hit, ‘Aasai,’ happened. “I made mistakes and learnt from them. I allowed myself to be surrounded by riff-raff and got carried away,” he candidly accepts. Though bruised and battered over the years, both physically and psychologically, today Ajith stands tall with his success quotient intact.
Solid family support and grit are his strengths. “The brash young Ajith is gone. Now I’m probably turning philosophical and even spiritual. I read a lot and it has made me realise the transience of fame and fortune. Agreed, it’s a rat race everywhere, but let’s move on … live and let live!”
Happiness is a state of mind. It has nothing to do with success or failures, Ajith believes. “I’m happy. If today God appeared before me and said my days on the Earth are over, I wouldn’t mind. Only that I’d ask him for some time to experience and enjoy fatherhood,” winks this dad-to-be.
“My hardcore fans have stood by me through thick and thin. My parents are around to see me growing and so is my circle of friends,” he says.
Of course, wife Shalini is the focal point of his life. He smiles: “Sure. She has brought about positive changes in me. She gave up a very successful career to marry me and I’ll never forget that.”
He’s undergone 14 surgeries and his spine has been fused at three levels! But Ajith has always bounced back into circulation. A medical marvel almost! “I’ve been through hell. I want all the ailing folks out there to know that if you have the determination you can overcome the worst obstacles… The best part is the risky stunts I do have never gone awry. But simple stuff such as jumping off a stool, have confined me to bed!” he laughs.
Ajith is one of the most imitated actors at every mimicry show. “Even some of the best SMS jokes are on me. I enjoy them and forward them to my friends. I’m mature enough to take these things in my stride.”
Born of a Sindhi mother (from Kolkata) and a Keralite father, Ajith began speaking Tamil only after entering films. And for that his diction and pronunciation are amazing. “I’ve lived in Tamil Nadu since childhood,” he explains.
His elder brother is into stocks and his younger sibling has settled down in Seattle, after graduating from IIT Madras, and a Masters abroad. “I had twin sisters but they died very young,” he ruminates. Ajith’s philanthropy is little known. “Once I talk about it, it means publicity, and the purpose gets defeated,” he says. So he prefers not to dwell on the Mohini-Mani Foundation in his parents’ names, either. The only Hindi film Ajith worked in is ‘Ashoka.’ “Santosh Sivan offered it to me and Shah Rukh Khan called me up saying he wanted me to do the role ,” he smiles.
What does he look for when he signs on the dotted line? “Compatibility!” is the surprising reply. “ If you can’t vibe with the director, work can become torture,” he explains.
His next film after ‘Billa’ will be directed by Raju Sundaram. When out of the blue Ajith says, “I believe in the ‘KISS’ policy,” you look at him perplexed. “‘Keep It Simple, Stupid!’ is what it stands for. Life would be simpler if you take one step at a time and don’t get rattled by irrelevant issues.”
Leafing through a racer’s diary
Mention racing and Ajith’s eyes light up. “I began racing two-wheelers at 18,” he begins. Though cars were equally enticing and Ajith was good at driving them, bikes were an affordable option at that point in time. During the pract ice session (for Group E bikes up to 1100 cc) for the National Championships Ajith met with a major accident. It was in 2002 that he got back into the racing ring, this time with single-seater cars, and acquitted himself creditably in the Formula Maruti National Championships that year. Again in the 14 events held in five Asian countries — China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Korea — for the BMW Asian Championship, Ajith notched up a creditable 12th overall position out of 32 international contestants. “Though it was an Asian event, it had racers from all over the world including Australia. My best in an individual race at the Championship was fourth,” he says.
The actor-sportsman then set his eyes on the British Formula 3 Championship Scholarship Class, a stepping stone to Formula1. “ Here 300 kmph is the speed we are talking about and I comfortably managed 290. Twice I was on the victory stand winning the third place at the Donington Park and Knock Hill Circuits.”
At the end of the day, Ajith feels gratified that he has represented his country at the international level. But what is disconcerting to him is the insipid response from his fraternity. “A pat on the shoulder would have helped. Instead I got a kick on my back,” he shrugs.

Billa : Open Sesame :
The movie, which is majorly shot in foriegn locales, recently had a song shoot in AVM Studios in Chennai.
The entire bunch of press people were prevented from viewing the shoot as Nayantara, glamorously outfitted, was performing the dance number.
Billa has pretty interesting ingredients to lure movie lovers .

Shriya Might Just Get Lucky With Ajith
Now it seems that Raju Sundaram will actually direct this one. Ayngaran first tried Prabhu deva but as he was busy with the Hindi Pokkiri, he has directed the offer to his brother Raju. Rumour mills are also churning out the heroine's name and if they are to be believed then the Sivaji girl will pair opposite the Ultimate star. However, only an official announcement can clear the air in this regard.

It's All Work For Ajith
"When I was confused and things were going wrong, a meeting with Rajnikanth changed my life. He presented me a book. When I browsed through it, my life change took a change. I was relieved of all my confusion", he says.
Having been in the industry for over 15 years, Ajith says, "I have been part of several blockbusters and several films have gone on to become hits. More over, without any support or mentor in the industry, I have succeeded in rendering hit films. Equally, my career in motor racing had witnessed some joyous moments".

Ajith looks forward to parenthood
Says Ajith, “When I was in Malaysia for the shoot of Billa for more than a month, I visited Chennai for about 18 times to see Shalini. Such is my excitement in welcoming the new member to our family. I am eagerly waiting for that moment”.
When asked about Billa, Ajith said, “The film is coming out in a grand way. The new version will be technically sleek and will be our dedication to 'Superstar' Rajnikanth who immediately granted us the permission to remake the movie. Get ready for the fireworks

Buxom Namitha On The Move
Taking time of her busy schedule, the actress says, "I play a glamorous role in Billa. I am happy that good offers are coming my way now. I am very happy, I derive satisfaction from doing such roles and at the end of the day, and I am elated to have done justice to them.
"I strongly believe that even by doing minuscule roles, I can garner the attention of movie buffs. However, my roles in movies including Aye and Chanakya had more scope for me to showcase my skill".

Behind my Silence is Rajini
"Hai evening six ok?" - after 3 years Ajit has accepted to give an interview, the reason for his merry mood is that its his 15th year in cinema! Amidst the melodious music in Park sheraton, he welcomes us with a beuatiful smile.
Success and failures have never been a stranger to Ajit. Even now all his movies take a bumper opening- That's Ajit's speciality! right from the moment he forayed as the first generation hero , he has tasted ups and downs. In the dictionary of Kodambaakam THALA is a irrestable word.
"I always beleive what my heart says. I beleive that truth always triumphs, thats why I kept myself away for sometime. This time has given me the scope to understand myself ans also makes others understand me, so now I thought its the right time to talk to you"
says Ajit with a friendly smile!
How r you ?, first tell us that !
I am very happy. I always have the first smile for u people, well just that i have reduced unnecessary speech. What we have spoke out rules us, but what we have not spoken is still under our command, but anyways after 3 years - I am prepared to talk something good.
I stepped into cinema knowing nothing, then with lots of fear, I learned a lot. Assai was my sixth film but that wa my first success! God never allows anybody to taste success easily. In 15 years I have done 46 films, Aasai, Kaadal kottai, Mugavari, Vaali, Villain, Varalaaru, Kireedam...a long list sparks up in my heart, I have not made pathbreaking victories but i have tried something good.
In the past, I have spoken unnecessarily - some things were reflected in a wrong meaning - much has happened. Now I am clear, I need everybody! Yes, Ajit and Shalini needs everybody's blessing and love! Silence is like meditation, we need to learn a lot. These four years I am very happy with my Family, my home, friends, my favorite games etc.., what have u earned by having a successfull carreer alone? we should be successfull in our personnel life as well, if that is not peaceful what do we do with the money, fame etc?
Congrats! going to become a dad now, so Junior Ajit or Shalini?
Thank you !our wedding in itself was a beautiful dream ! we married and accepted each other happily . when someone comments us that we are made for each other, we just smile gently because we have fought so much too! but the fight will also be there as to who givesup first, when I leave for a car race, there's a smiley face who stands at the end of the track and encourages- thats Shalini!, she started watching me playing badminton but now she is a state level player!
She is the same old Shalini but nowadays she looks more and more beautiful! The respect I have on her is growing ! Another soul that is going to join us is giving us more happiness!
This is one of our best days! The due date in in January, saying that in our style- we have a pongal relase for you!
We could not see the Dhamakka Ajit now, all we see is an Ajit who ressembles a Silent Corporate Guru! how did this Magic happen?
I am now trained to respect my silence as a Language. This is a good feeling. Why should someone reject peace? I have accepted this peace graciously .
"Live and Let live" 2 lines 3 words. These lines mean the most in this world and I have realised that! What makes me happier is to know that all people in this industry like me a little I am not saying that I am the perfect man and everyone had hurt me. My age I might have been wrong too! if there is some good to somebody because of Ajit , its fine , but there should nobody who earns bad will because of me. I have understood that. That is what Life thought me!
This body has stood 14 surgeries ! 4 in the spine alone!! I have much pain in my body but the mental agony that I had come across was much much more!
Doctors call it ba miracle when they hear that I am walking now, but against all that I am dancing and doing risky stunts on my own interest even though masters dnt advise. For Billa I made a 500 feet jump! I do not call this my skill or my confidence! I call this a blessing!
Nobody can stop what god can give and nobody can give what he does not want to give.
My life was changed because of Rajini Sir! when I was in a confused state with so much problems, he gifted me with the book called "Living with the Himalayan Masters"
When we expect something big and if that makes us happy, then the happiness will fade once what we expected moves away from us - These small things were well brought out in that book!
A few days back when someone would have told that a book can change my life, I wud have laughed my lungs out! but now the book which Rajini sir gave me just proved that, this attachment is not seen outside, but its a lingering feel and state of mind.
Rajini sir has helped me to understand myself !
Trisha recently made a statement that "Ajit is the best person she has met in this industry" and even Simbhu tells that "Ajit is the only person who never speaks on the sly". What do u feel when u hear all this?
I feel so grateful and I wish to thank them! what makes me more happy is to know that everyone likes me a little !
Everbody is now expecting BILLA.so how is that shaping out ?
Its a good movie! Already a Super hit movies done by Rajini sir..The current generation might not have seen BILLA and remaking BILLA was one an idea that I liked very much!
When Sharukh remade DON, there was much controversy on that issue. So I met Rajini sir and spoke to him about my idea of remaking Billa and sought his blessings ! he was so happy about it, wished me and to make things more auspicious kicked-off the project by lighting the lamp!
BILLA is surely my next phase in Cinema..its growing to be a technically stylish film ! well its better my movies do the talks than myself!! probably this deepavali !

Ayngaran hunts for a director for Ajith
The combination of Ajith and Prabhu Deva would be something new in Kollywood, but the latter is currently busy in Bollywood directing Salman Khan in the Hindi version of Pxxxxx, which is likely to get completed next year. Meanwhile commercial directors like K S Ravikumar, Lingusamy, Hari and Saran are also being considered. However Ravikumar's first preference would be to direct Rajinikanth for which talks are said to be going on. Hari plans to do a movie with Bharath after Vel, while Lingusamy has few projects in his mind, one of them being a script for Paruthiveeran Karthik. Saran seems to be more likely to bag the offer, with his story for Kamal being shelved for the time being.

Ajith Swarmed By Corporates
Ajith's career has always been a roller coaster ride. Though he had enough share of luck going his way, but a mega success had always been eluding the actor. In spite of it, Ajith has been managing to get plump offers come his way.
After a much needed break in Varalaru, Ajith followed it up with a mediocre outing in Aalwar followed by Kireedam.
Currently shooting for Billa, a remake of yesteryear Rajnikanth classic, buzz is that Ajith has been assigned to work for prominent production house like UTV in the coming months.
The corporate companies, who are evincing interest to produce films in Kollywood, have been making a beeline to Ajith, Kireedam was produced by Adlabs in association with Sujatha Cine Arts.
UTV, a prominent corporate house involved in producing Tamil films too have now expressed their desire to work with Ajith.
When the tough gets going, the going gets tough for Ajith

A change for the better?
The day of the release of ‘Kireedam’ had young director Vijay on tenterhooks. Understandable, because it was a dream debut for the director — a huge banner had reposed confidence in him and given him a mega project on a platter. And it is to his credit that Vijay has lived up to it.
Balancing romance, action, sentiment and comedy he assures you it’s a decent fare for the family audience and Ajit fans. “We’ve not thrust songs or fights into it at any point. They happen only when necessary. We didn’t go abroad for the duets and you’ll not find the predictable item number. Decent and natural within the commercial format, we are sure ‘Kireedam’ will go on to become a major hit.”
‘Kireedam’ is an experimental film, where realism and authenticity have been given primary importance. “I’ll give you an example. No man can hit a hulk of a villain with bare hands. You’ll always see Ajit using something he can lay hands on, to attack the enemy,” says Vijay.
Trained in Priyadarshan’s school the young man is always on the look out for spontaneity and naturalness in cinema. “True. The four years under him were a tremendous learning experience,” says Vijay. It was Priyadarshan who recommended Vijay to producer Suresh Balaje for ‘Kireedam.’ “Priyan has been supportive throughout,” smiles Vijay, who also has around 65 commercials to his credit.
“It was an excellent chance for me to work with Ajit. He makes decisions quickly and sticks to them. Only once did he listen to the narration,” Vijay goes on. Ajit told Vijay that he could do what the script demands and not change things for his sake. Yet how much is a director’s contribution in a remake? “As far as ‘Kireedam’ goes we’ve taken only the last 15 minutes of the Malayalam original. I worked on the screenplay for a year and a half. So you can imagine how much effort has gone into it.”
Did not the hero, crew or the producer even think that a negative end to such a positive and upright hero could tilt the scales against it? All said and done it’s the hero who is supreme to the man on the street. He wouldn’t want to see him lose. And playing up to his psyche could provide a straight ticket to success. “We know it, but we wanted to see how the audience takes to a realistic end. And all the Chennai theatres, be it Kasi or Sathyam, which I visited on the first few days, I saw the standing ovation from the audience when the hero, a victim of circumstances, breaks down. It was gratifying,” avers Vijay. “And films which end on a sad note, ‘Paruthi Veeran,’ for instance, were accepted.” But the point here is such films may not showcase a mass hero. No avid fan today likes to watch an upright man suffer till the end without respite.
“I was standing a little further away from Ajit when he came out after watching the movie. He walked up to me and with a hug said, ‘If I have to list my five best films ‘Kireedam’ will definitely find a place in it.’ It was an unforgettable moment for me,” Vijay recalls fondly.
Now to the most topical question of them all … Why then has the end been changed to a happy one since the past few days? “That’s purely because of the feedback from the media and request from distributors. Either way I’m confident that ‘Kireedam’ will go on to become one of Ajit’s major hits,” says a confident Vijay. It’s a feel-good mood that the Tamil film buff would like to carry home, and now ‘Kireedam’ is giving him just that.

Shining in glory
Cop Ajith routs up and thrashes convicts who escape jail and is hailed loudly by the general public. Chief cop Rajkiran salutes his superior Ajith. They are none other than father and son.
Just when we think that one is subject to such sentiments from beginning itself, we see a bleary eyed Rajkiran wake up from sleep and the scene we just described was his dream. Father wants to make his son a top cop and Ajith also works hard on his part. But just when it looks like things are working out, fate intervenes and the climax ends with an out of the usual solution.
From stealing the Pillayar statue from Trisha's house to other pranks, Thala's role gains momentum. "I've written the exam for the SI post. A year after I get a job, we will marry. At the earliest, we will first have a son, then a daughter. That OK with you?" says Ajith in a mater of fact manner way of expressing his love, instead of the usual sickening coyness. This immediately endears him to Trisha as well as the audience.
On one sentimental track, we have Rajkiran playing the good, dutiful father who coaches his son in sports, studies and expressing his heart's desire to his son to buy a house after he gets a job. That's what any father would desire for his family. Ajith suddenly takes an action avatar and the story gathers momentum.
The villain grabs Ajith's dad by his shirt and when Ajith's actions lands the villain in the ICU, one can see the tiger in him. There's fear that if the villain survives, anything could happen to anyone at any time, but just when everyone is quaking in fear, director Vijay turns into the sentimental track and this could have been avoided.
Trisha mistaking Ajith for a petty thief and finally being astounded when she discovers his true identity, and when she talks ill of Ajith's parents when sitting in the water tank on the terrace and blushing when she realizes she has made a gaffe, are good opportunities to show her acting talent.
As a house husband, Vivek appears now and then to do his comedy track, but he suddenly goes missing and one can say in his own words, "ada paaveengalaa! "
In the midst of a song, a scene shows the parents of Ajith and Trisha finalizing their betrothal and this shows the director's sharp thinking.
The villain waits with mad rage to finish off Ajith but it is ridiculous when he's wounded and killed by Ajith in a weak manner. "Akkam pakkam yaarum illai" is a good song by composer GV Prakash, who has also done a good job of the background score.
Thiru's cinematography is wonderful and one could well say that no one else but him could have made Trichy Palakkarai look so beautiful.
Thala's 'Kireetom' is shining in glory!

Ajith, Saran together again?
Saran followed it up with massive hits in films including Amarkalam and Attagasam. Considered a safe bet in the industry, the duo is coming together after a gap of two years.
Sources say Ajith and Saran would work together for a movie which would begin soon. Saran has floated his own production house and has been churning out movies like Aaru and Muni, directed by other directors.

Kireedam- Climax Changed
In the new climax, hero Sakthivel (Ajit) after killing the notorious criminal wanted by the police, a voice-over with the Madras High Court in the background says that Sakthi is pardoned. Later he gets a medal from the President of India and the film ends with a shot of Ajit coming in police uniform and saluting his dad.
The audiences of Tamilnadu will not accept a superstar like Ajit as a loser in the end. Remember that Ajit’s Mugavari (2000) climax which also showed him as a loser was changed due to audience’s request. And the Sivaji Ganesan classic Vasantha Maligai(1973) climax which showed him dying was changed to a happy ending three days after the release which later turned out to be a blockbuster.
Says director A.L.Vijay: “Kireedam is doing well at box-office especially in cities like Chennai and Coimbatore. But we are forced to change the climax due to popular request. A press statement will be issued by K.Balaje soon.”
